A Comparison: Recruiting and Equipping

Recruiting is finding a person to fill a specific need, an open position. Equipping is helping a person figure out, and then follow, God’s call to service in their life.
Recruiting focuses primarily on the position. Equipping focuses primarily on the person.
A focus on recruiting views the church primarily as an organization with needs that are to be filled by members. A focus on equipping sees the church as a gathering of God’s people, following His call, working together to accomplish His purposes.
Recruiting is done when the position is filled. After a position is filled, equipping makes sure the person is trained for the task, is oriented to the ways of the church, is supported and affirmed while serving.
