 Recruiting 101

We might be past the worst of the covid panemic, but we're certainly not past its effects. Churches are struggling to figure out the 'new normal,' as we realize there's no going back to the 'old' normal. And volunteerism is one of our biggest struggles.

If we're honest, we'll admit volunteerism was also a struggle pre-covid. The good news (yes, there IS good news) is that the basics of healthy chuirch volunteerism haven't changed. So this is a good time to revisit the basics of effective recruiting in this four-part series, "Recruiting 101."

"Recruiting 101: Want Volunteers? Avoid This
We start with two Thou Shalt Not's:
1. Thou shalt not delay. Asking people to help is not your favorite things to do . . . . Read more.

Recruiting 101: Spell It Out
If you were looking for work, would you be interested in a job where the responsibilities were only vaguely described, where hours and benefits weren’t mentioned at all, and no one had clear answers to your questions? Me neither. Yet that’s how we recruit volunteers – with a short, general request for help in our announcements. Read more

 It's About Time: Everyday Serving

Would church volunteerism benefit if we all grew in our everyday serving? I'm not aware of any data supporting that premise, but my gut says it's true. My own serving at church, both as staff and volunteer, benefits when I wrestle through the big picture issues of serving in all my activities, every day. So just imagine with me how much both the church and the world would benefit if all God's people were serving more intentionally, joyfully, impactfully and faith-fully every day.

How do we get there? When we talk things through with fellow followers of Jesus, in relationships that provide support and accoutability, we're in great position to "consider how we may spur one another on to love and good deeds" (Hebrews 10:24). "It's About Time" is a six-session discipleship resource I wrote and am using  to spark these conversations and relationships. It's available to you in two ways.

Purchase "It's About Time" materials:  The content (short videos, pdf Participant Guides and Leader's Guide) are available online for download or video streaming. Your $14.99 purchase allows unlimited use within your congregation. See more details, including session topics and a 2-min explanatory video, here.

Join an "It's About Time" class: If you'd like to first experience conversations about everyday serving, I will be leading the six sessions of "It's About Time" online beginning Wed. November 9 at 2pm Central Time (3pm Eastern; noon Pactific) and continuing roughtly every other week into January. Sessions will be 75 to 90 minutes in length to allow both experiencing our own growth as participants, and also conversation about use in our churches. Maximum of 6 participants; cost $120; $50 for a second person from the same congregation. Includes access to all materials for use in your church. More details here.

 Good Stuff: Be Thank-Full

"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever." Psalm 136:1

However challenging our circumstances, the psalmist reminds us we have much to be thankful for. Thanking our great God is certainly priority one. Thanking those who serve us, and thanking those we see serving others is also a priority, and beneficial to use and to them.
